RIVERTON — A 21-year-old man died Thursday morning after a crash involving a vehicle and an e-bike in Riverton.
The accident occurred just before 6 a.m. at 1300 W. 12600 South.
"It was a white utility vehicle that ran a red light. It was about two seconds after the red light had flashed and hit another individual that was on an electric motorcycle crossing on a crosswalk, and he hit him pretty hard," said Joshuan Lee, spokesman for the Riverton Police Department.
The victim, identified as Owen Thomsen, was transported to the hospital in serious condition and died shortly after arriving.
Lee said the driver of the utility vehicle, a man, is cooperating with police. He also said the e-bike that was hit came to rest 180 feet from the crosswalk where the collision occurred.
"It's highly likely, given the evidence that we have, that white utility vehicle was going a high speed," Lee said. "The second thing that we want to stress is that we're seeing more and more accidents involving e-bikes, golf carts, what have it, and it's become very dangerous. They're not street legal, and if you're going to cross the crosswalk, you've got to get off the motorcycle and push it, just like you would a bicycle."
Lee said the incident is still under investigation.
