ST. GEORGE — Beginning in early 2027, the world's oceans will be patrolled and protected by a second USS Utah.

The famous first USS Utah (BB-31) was a battleship destroyed by Japanese torpedoes on Dec. 7, 1941, in the surprise attack at Pearl Harbor that pulled the United States into World War II.

Now there will be a second USS Utah (SSN-801), but this one will conduct its missions beneath the ocean surface as a Virginia-class fast attack nuclear submarine.

The USS Utah is in the final stages of construction and is slated to be christened on Oct. 25 in Groton, Connecticut.
