OGDEN — An Orem man is charged with rape of a child stemming from an alleged encounter with a 12-year-old girl in West Haven, whom he initially met on Snapchat.

The Weber County Prosecutor's Office filed charges last week in 2nd District Court in Ogden against Andrew Thomas Oldroyd, 36, regarding an alleged incident in a bathroom during a "pool party" at a West Haven apartment complex on July 11.

Oldroyd was interviewed about the alleged encounter on July 28, arrested July 29 and, as of Monday, was being held at the Weber County Jail with a preliminary hearing scheduled for Tuesday.

Aside from rape of a child, a first-degree felony, Oldroyd is also charged with object rape of a child, sodomy on a child, sexual exploitation of a minor and distribution of material harmful to a minor, according to court papers. Weber County Sheriff's Office officials investigated the case.

Oldroyd and the girl allegedly exchanged explicit photos on Snapchat and also communicated via text and phone, ahead of the meeting on July 11. At the pool party, Oldroyd allegedly engaged in intercourse with the child in a bathroom, among other actions, according to charging documents.

"People entered the bathroom and it scared Andrew, and that is when the intercourse stopped, at that point, and they got dressed," court documents state.
