KANARRAVILLE, Iron County — A man died Thursday after leading deputies on a car chase and crashing, police said.

An Iron County sheriff's deputy attempted to stop a driver on northbound I-15 for speeding at about 2:09 p.m.

"The driver of the vehicle failed to stop after the officer initiated his overhead lights and emergency sirens. A pursuit began between the driver of the vehicle and law enforcement. The driver of the vehicle traveled at excessive speeds and struck another vehicle," according to a statement from the Iron County Attorney's Office.

The driver forced other vehicles off the road, the attorney's office said. "Due to the increased risk of public safety," officers performed a PIT maneuver to stop the car. The car crashed after the PIT, though, investigators haven't said whether the maneuver caused the crash or if it was due to other factors, such as a blown tire or going off the road.

The crash happened near the town of Summit, which is between Cedar City and Parowan.

The driver was flown by helicopter with injuries to St. George Regional Hospital, where he later died. The attorney's office did not say whether the man was injured in the initial crash or when he was stopped during the PIT maneuver.

The driver's name has not yet been released.

The Iron, Garfield, Beaver and Kane County Critical Incident Task Force is investigating.
