LOGAN — Logan Canyon has reopened after fire crews shut it down Tuesday afternoon to fight a wildfire, which officials say is still burning.
The Rick Springs Fire, first reported about 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, was still burning Wednesday morning about 15 miles northeast of Logan on both sides of U.S. 89, state fire officials said. The fire is fueled by "grass, brush and timber," officials said in a Utah Fire Info social media post; it has burned approximately 50 to 70 acres.
Fire officials evacuated the Lewis M. Turner and Tony Grove campground areas for a time, but those evacuation orders had been lifted as of Wednesday. They also said a Type 3 incident management team will assume management of the fire.
Crews from the Logan Fire Department, Cache County Fire Department, the Rich County Fire Department, as well as other state firefighting crews, assisted with the initial response to the fire. Air assistance also joined to fight the fire, according to the Logan Fire Department.
While the highway through Logan Canyon is now open, fire officials advise drivers to use state Route 39 and other alternative routes as long delays are expected.
