WOODS CROSS — Fire crews found a man with significant burns on his body after arriving at the scene of a just-extinguished building fire Monday.
About 10 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to 1187 S. Redwood Road in Woods Cross for a grass fire. Crews found a commercial building that had been on fire and was put out by employees from a nearby business who had extinguishers ready, according to South Davis Metro Fire.
When walking in the building, fire crews found a man who had "burns over a significant portion of (his) body," firefighters said. The man had been transporting large containers of methanol and placing them in small containers. The South Davis Metro Fire investigators say an explosion occurred when the containers hit the electrical pump.
"Actual flames were coming off of his clothing," said Kenzie Jenkins, an employee at Fastback Moto. She and her co-workers used their extinguishers to put out the fire.
"I'm just glad he's alive," she said.
As there were hazardous materials in the building, firefighters decontaminated the man, who was in serious condition, and transported him to the University of Utah Hospital's Burn Center, where he is in critical condition.
South Davis Metro Fire encouraged businesses to remember how the Fastback Moto employees responded to the fire, including the accessibility of the fire extinguishers. They encouraged businesses to contact their local fire department to assist in creating a plan for their business.
