SALT LAKE CITY — Another case of measles has been diagnosed in Utah, bringing this year's state total to 10.
This latest case involves an unvaccinated person residing within the Southwest Utah Public Health District, according to a press release issued by the Utah Department of Health and Human Services on Wednesday.
The person reported self-isolating when they became sick, the release states, and the individual is already past the infectious period.
All 10 individuals who have been diagnosed with measles in Utah, at this point, are unvaccinated, according to the state health department.
Seven of them live in the Utah County Health Department. The health department announced on Friday that the measles virus had been detected in wastewater in Provo, indicating that at least one person in the area has contracted the infection.
The other three individuals who have confirmed infections are in the Southwest Utah Public Health District.
The Utah Department of Health and Human Services said it has not identified any new exposure locations.
Measles symptoms typically appear about a week after exposure. Symptoms initially include a high fever, cough, runny nose, or red eyes and — after about four days — a rash will often appear.
The state health department urges Utahns with symptoms to stay away from others and call their clinic or doctor before going out to prevent exposing others.
