SALT LAKE CITY — The offseason has finally ended and football is back in action.
Utah football kicks off its 2025 season on Wednesday with the beginning of fall camp. To get you ready for the season, here's a look back at the offensive and defensive breakdowns, a deeper look into the games, and the major storylines from Big 12 media days and fall camp.
Give each a listen as you prepare for football season.
Post spring offensive position breakdown
Utah enters the 2025 season with a completely rebuilt offense, with New Mexico transfer quarterback Devon Dampier leading the charge. He'll have the keys to the offense and one of the best offensive lines in the country.
The coaching staff has done well to build a roster around Dampier, but there's still several questions about what the offense could be this season, especially at the wide receiver position. But the optimism around the offense is high with Utah's roster.
Post spring defensive position breakdown
The defense will replace a handful of starters from last season, but there's consistency and talent at every level of the defense. There are a few questions that need to be answered, but there's not a lot of problems ahead of the season.
Schedule preview: UCLA and Cal Poly
The Utes return to the Rose Bowl for a nonconference matchup against a former Pac-12 rival. The game will have some heightened attention with Nico Iamaleava and Devon Dampier making their debut for their respective teams.
Utah then opens up the season at home against Cal Poly in the annual FCS game as part of the nonconference schedule. It's the first time these two teams have played.
Schedule preview: Wyoming and Texas Tech
Utah returns on the road to rekindle an old rivalry from the Mountain West days with Wyoming — and yes, Kyle Whittingham is still roaming the sidelines. This presents an interesting early test for the Utes before opening up Big 12 play.
The Utes then return to Rice-Eccles Stadium to open up conference play with a Texas Tech team that invested millions to upgrade an already talented roster. The Red Raiders are going all in for the 2025 season, but can all the upgrades gel enough to be the difference?
Schedule preview: West Virginia and Arizona State
As Utah approaches the halfway point of its season, they'll have a tough test going cross country to take on a West Virginia team with so many unknowns. The Mountaineers brought in 52 new players from the transfer portal and will be rebuilt in essentially every position group.
Following a five-game stretch, Utah gets its first bye of the season before welcoming reigning Big 12 champions Arizona State to Rice-Eccles Stadium. This is a roster that returns almost everybody — while upgrading in the portal — but has to move forward without standout rusher Cam Skattebo.
Schedule preview: BYU and Colorado
It's a rivalry pairing — at least with one real one and another one that has been forced — couple of weeks. Utah travels to Provo looking to get revenge after a two-game losing skid. BYU has questions at quarterback, which will impact the season — for good or bad.
And Colorado is going through a transition without a Heisman winner and star quarterback Shadeur Sanders on the roster. Can Coach Prime find success in Year 3 in Boulder?
Schedule preview: Cincinnati and Baylor
Cincinnati is a potential up-and-coming team in the Big 12, but there's still many questions about what the Bearcats can be this season. This late in the season, Utah will have a good understanding of what they have and what the Bearcats will present at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
And then it's a return to Waco, Texas, for the first conference game between these two opponents despite playing each other for the last two seasons. Baylor is arguably one of the hottest teams coming into the season, but how will they look when they host the Utes?
Schedule preview: Kansas State and Kansas
Kansas State could be in the mix for a Big 12 title, and a trip to Salt Lake City could provide an interesting backdrop to the conference title race. The Wildcats have improved at spots, but is Avery Johnson up to the task this season?
And then Utah closes out the regular season with a road trip to Lawrence, Kansas, for a Black Friday game. The Jayhawks had a rough 2024 season that picked up late, but they lose a lot of talent going into this season. Is Jalon Daniels enough to get this team in contention for a Big 12 title?
Big 12 Media Days recap
There were no shortage of stories from the annual Big 12 media days in Frisco, Texas, this year. Kyle Whittingham addressed his coaching tenure and reason for coming back, while others, like Devon Dampier and Spencer Fano, stole the show.
Here's a recap of what took place at Big 12 media days.
