SALT LAKE CITY — A man was critically injured early Friday after being hit by a Union Pacific train.

The incident occurred at 200 South and 700 West about 5:15 a.m. and preliminary information "suggests the man attempted to cross the tracks in the pedestrian crossing as the train was moving north," police said.

The Salt Lake City Fire Department, Gold Cross and Salt Lake police found the man with critical injuries and he was taken to a local hospital.

Police spokesman Brent Weisberg said it appears the train was blaring its horn and all indicators of an oncoming train were activated and functioning.

The incident is being investigated as an industrial incident and the crime lab was on scene gathering evidence.
