LIMA, Peru — It was a night of celebration, joy, and emotion, in Lima, Peru, as the Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square performed before tens of thousands of people at the National Stadium.

The energy and excitement for the Saturday night concert started hours before the gates opened as people showed up anxious to get inside. Nearly 35,000 people filled the stadium, and it was broadcast live to Bolivia, Columbia, Ecuador, and various places in Peru. The choir estimates as many as 70,000 people may have seen it live.

"I'm very excited," Susana Huapaya said to KSL-TV inside the stadium as she was filled with anticipation. "I've been waiting for this concert a long time. We have had the tickets for months."

This is the first time the choir has come to Peru and the first time the choir would be performing an entire concert in a venue this size.

"I feel a lot of the spirit," Alejandra Moran said, "I'm so excited to be here, it's a very fulfilling experience for many members of the church."

Lima, Peru, is a bustling city and one of the largest in South America with more than 10 million people. The country sits on the west coast of South America and is home to about 700,000 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The church is growing rapidly with four operating temples and five more announced. Lima is the fourth stop for the choir's "Songs of Hope" world tour. The first was Mexico, the second was the Philippines, then the Southeastern part of the U.S.

That's why this concert is so historic for the country and the church. A once-in-a-lifetime experience for many people in attendance to see this massive choir in person and to hear their voices.

The 90-minute concert had a variety of songs, many of them in Spanish. The choir also brought in famous musical artists from Peru including Mauricio Mesones and world-renowned singer and songwriter Fonseca. Fonseca not only performed some of his popular music but also sang the very familiar and popular Latter-day Saint primary song, "I Am a Child of God." The crowd joined in and sang along.

The program included dozens of youth dancers who gave a message of overcoming the storms of life through Jesus Christ. The stadium then lit up with cellphone lights.

The crowd went wild on the final number, which was the country's famous patriotic national song — Contigo, Peru.

"It was amazing, the spirit, I loved it," Vania Sandoval said after the concert.

"I was grateful, I really felt so happy because I came here with my family. My husband is a bishop and my two children," Mayra Sandavol said. "Hope, that's what we need at this moment."

"Joy, happiness, I have no words," Marcelo Rios said, who was just overwhelmed with the performance.

The next stop for the choir on its world tour is Argentina in August, and then Brazil in February of 2026, which was announced at a press conference earlier in the week to Peru media.
