WEST VALLEY CITY — A West Valley man was charged Friday with shooting his brother before police said he fled the scene and then hit and killed a woman.
Sasa Scott Hamilton, 20, is charged in 3rd District Court with firing a gun and causing serious injury, a first-degree felony with a domestic violence penalty enhancement; obstruction of justice, a second-degree felony; and two counts of illegal discharge of a firearm, a third-degree felony.
On Dec. 17, West Valley police responded to a shooting at the Rockwood Way Apartments, 3765 W. Rockwood Way, and found a 26-year-old man who had been shot in the upper left thigh.
The man had just arrived with three others at the apartment complex after Christmas shopping and were met by Hamilton, the victim's brother, the charges state. The two, who have had a long-running dispute, started arguing and then fighting, witnesses told police. At one point, Hamilton pulled out a gun and his brother challenged him to "shoot me," according to charging documents.
At least three shots were fired. Hamilton got into his vehicle and drove off after shooting his brother, the charges allege.
The Utah Highway Patrol says he ran a red light at 8000 West on state Route 201 just after 9 p.m. and smashed into a Ford Escape causing it to catch fire and killing Rossana J. Moreno, 34, of Magna. who was pregnant.
"Charges involving the fatal traffic collision will be considered once additional evidence can be examined within the next week," prosecutors wrote in the court documents.
Prosecutors have requested that Hamilton be held in the Salt Lake County Jail without the possibility of posting bail pending trial.
