WEST JORDAN — A West Jordan woman is accused of trying to collect life insurance money by falsely claiming her significant other was dead.

The 32-year-old woman was charged Friday in 3rd District Court with making a fraudulent insurance claim, a second-degree felony; and two counts of forgery, third-degree felonies.

A man who had obtained financing to buy a car elected to purchase optional life insurance and single disability insurance via Minnesota Life Insurance Company, according to charging documents. The woman was listed as a second beneficiary. Court records do not say how the woman and man are related.

On Aug. 28, 2023, the woman filed a life insurance claim, alleging the man had been involved in a car crash while in Mexico on July 18, 2023, and died on Aug. 10, 2023, the charges state.

"In support of her claim, (she) submitted or caused to be submitted, several documents to Minnesota Life Insurance Company including a death certificate, cremation authorization and police report for (his) alleged death," according to the charges. She also filed a disability claim because the man was allegedly in a coma following the crash up until his death.

The insurance company, however, hired another company to conduct an investigation and discovered "the documents submitted by (the woman) were ... fictitious," the charges state.

In fact, West Jordan police had responded to a report of a domestic violence incident between the man and woman on the day the man allegedly died, according to the charges.

The woman is scheduled to be in court on Sept. 23.
