RIVERTON — Riverton police on Tuesday continued to investigate the shooting death of a 19-year-old man.

Just after midnight on Monday, police responded to a report of shots fired in the Monarch Meadows area west of the Mountain View Corridor. Officers found a 19-year-old man near Skippering Lane and Mimosa Street who had been shot and was critically injured, said Riverton spokesman Josh Lee.

The man was also wearing a bulletproof vest and had a gun and a machete, Lee said. Police were still trying to determine Monday why the man, whose name has not yet been released, had those items.

He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Detectives canvassing the area for evidence found a jacket with an identification card inside for an address in Orem, Lee said. Officers from Riverton and Orem police worked jointly to serve a warrant at that residence early Monday and took two people, ages 20 and 24, into custody for questioning.

But by Monday afternoon, Lee said the two men had been released from questioning and were not arrested.

No other information about the case had been released as of Tuesday afternoon, with Lee noting that it is a "complicated investigation."
