ROY — After a plane crashed into the yard of a Roy home last Wednesday, Mayor Robert Dandoy said he wants to see the Ogden-Hinckley Airport moved.

According to Dandoy, plane crashes are not uncommon in Roy. In 2020, a plane crash damaged two homes. In 2017, there was a crash on one of the city's major roadways. Both of those crashes were fatal.

"It was a miracle that those two pilots survived. And it certainly was a miracle that (the) aircraft didn't land on the top of one of those houses," said Dandoy. "I can't even imagine how it was able to weave through all of that and those people survived it, but that's not always going to be the case."

The Ogden-Hinckley Airport's current location poses a risk to nearby residential areas. There are three schools within the flight path into that airport, per Dandoy.

Additionally, Wednesday's plane crash happened just northwest of Roy High School. Both pilots were injured but nobody was killed.

Where would a new Ogden Airport go?

Dandoy said that the airport should be moved away from residential areas. He worries future crashes are inevitable.

"Where we have wide open spaces lots of places, (we would) certainly be able to control encroachment, if it was moved out to west Weber," Dandoy said.

His suggestion is similar to the relocation of the St. George Airport. It was relocated to a more remote location after the old one failed to meet Federal Aviation Administration standards, according to Airport Improvement magazine.
