TOOELE — A Tooele County sheriff's deputy is accused of having sexual relations with a woman who was being supervised by Adult Probation and Parole and was an inmate at the Tooele County Jail.

Luis Angel Trasvina-Maldonado, 28, of Tooele, was charged June 6 in 3rd District Court with three counts of custodial sexual relations and witness tampering, third-degree felonies.

The investigation began May 29 when a woman, who was previously an inmate at the jail and was being supervised by Adult Probation and Parole, disclosed that she allegedly engaged in sexual relations with Trasvina-Maldonado, a sheriff's deputy assigned to the jail, on three occasions, according to a police booking affidavit. The sexual activity did not happen at the jail, the affidavit states.

Grantsville police, who conducted the investigation, served a search warrant on Trasvina-Maldonado's phone and found messages between him and the woman.

"lt also contained sexual posed images as well as nude images of Mr. Trasvina and the victim that were exchanged. The cellphone also contained images of Mr. Trasvina with the victim, one of which showed them kissing," the affidavit states.

The woman claims Trasvina-Maldonado first sent her a text message while she was still an inmate at the jail, according to the affidavit.

"She found that message after being released from detention and Mr. Trasvina continued his attempts to contact her. lt should be noted that the victim was incarcerated at the Tooele County Jail during the same time that Mr. Trasvina was working as a jailer," the affidavit continues. "The victim was immediately placed (under the supervision of) Adult Probation and Parole upon her release."

Police say after Transvina-Maldonado was informed he was the subject of criminal investigation, "he proceeded to request the victim to lie to police in order to impede the investigation. Mr. Trasvina has also continued to contact the victim including having his spouse request she lie to police," the affidavit states.

After his arrest, Transvina-Maldonado was booked into jail in a different county.

His next court appearance is scheduled for July 8.
