PINTURA, Washington County — A driver was critically injured when he was struck by an SUV on I-15 while exiting his vehicle following a crash late Sunday.

The man was driving south in a Toyota Sequoia just south of Pintura, Washington County, about 11:55 p.m. when he swerved to avoid hitting a deer that ran out in front of the car, according to the Utah Highway Patrol. The Sequoia rolled multiple times and came to a rest in the northbound lanes.

The man, who has not been identified, was then struck by a northbound Land Rover SUV while he was exiting his vehicle.

He was taken via medical helicopter to a local hospital with critical injuries, troopers said. One adult and three children who were passengers in the Sequoia were taken to the hospital via ambulance with moderate to serious injuries.

The driver of the Land Rover was cooperative, troopers said, and minor injuries were reported among the four adult occupants of that vehicle.

Northbound I-15 was closed for about four hours overnight while officials investigated and cleaned up the scene. Additional information was not immediately available.
