AMERICAN FORK — Police have identified a woman who was killed in a home explosion that destroyed a duplex in American Fork last Wednesday.

American Fork police and fire crews responded to the duplex, 67 N. 370 East, just before 6 a.m. on March 20. The duplex had suffered significant damage and was on fire after an explosion occurred.

Kathy Harrison, 78, was found in the residence but died from injuries, police said. According to her obituary, Harrison was a seamstress, did the accounting for her husband's catering business and worked as a receptionist at Mount Timpanogos Women's Health Care.

"Her pleasant smile and loving disposition made her many, many friends over the years," the obituary states.

Officials called it a "miracle" that a resident who lived in the other unit of the duplex walked away from the explosion with just minor bumps and bruises. The home was a total loss and the explosion caused damage to a nearby house, as well.

Initially, the cause of the explosion was reported to be a gas leak, but police on Monday said the cause is still being investigated.
