SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Gov. Spencer Cox and Rep. John Curtis are planning trips to the southern border next week as congressional Republicans appear to have soured on talks for a bipartisan budget deal.

Cox will join 14 other Republican governors at the border in Eagle Pass, Texas, on Sunday, where he will attend a press conference with Texas state officials, his office announced Thursday.

Curtis, a member of the House Committee on Natural Resources, will visit the border and attend a field hearing titled "Biden's Border Crisis: The Consequences of Failing to Secure Federal Border Lands" in Sierra Vista, Arizona, on Feb. 8.

Cox, who has routinely criticized President Joe Biden for his handling of the influx of migrants at the southern border, expressed support for Texas Gov. Greg Abbott last week in a post on social media after Abbott announced that Texas state troopers would act to "secure the Texas border."

"The border is a disaster that continues to spiral out of control, both in terms of people and deadly fentanyl traffic," Cox said. "This is not a partisan issue. This is a national security issue. This is a common sense issue. This is an American issue. Utah thanks Texas and Gov. Abbot for stepping up where the Biden administration has failed over and over again."

Congressional Republicans have also regularly slammed the president for his handling of the border, but a bipartisan Senate immigration deal appears to be in jeopardy after former President Donald Trump came out against making a deal with Democrats in an election year.

Utah Sen. Mike Lee, a Republican, visited the border in October along with a contingent of GOP senators.
