MURRAY — The family of a man killed in a crash Tuesday by a woman arrested for investigation of drunk driving remembered him Friday as a "remarkable" man who touched many lives.
Chris Shupe, 37, was riding a motorcycle just before 8:30 p.m. Tuesday when he was hit and killed at the 5900 South and State Street intersection.
Police found the damaged car that hit the motorcycle pulled over in a convenience store parking lot at the corner of the intersection. Catherine Thulin, 48, told officers she was on her way to pick up her son at a TRAX station when the crash occurred, a police booking affidavit states.
"Catherine admitted to drinking that day, stating she had a couple of beers out of a 15-pack. Field sobriety tests were administered. Catherine displayed several signs and clues consistent with impairment," according to the affidavit.
A breath-analyzer test was given, which measured Thulin's blood-alcohol content at 0.206%, or over four times the legal limit, the affidavit states.
Thulin was arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of negligently operating a vehicle resulting in death, DUI and being an alcohol-restricted driver.
Shupe was riding his "beloved custom hardtail Harley" at the time of the crash, his family said on a GoFundMe page.*
"Chris was not just a person; he was a force of nature. His charm and charisma made him the star of any room he entered, and his authenticity allowed him to deeply connect with people from all walks of life. Whether you knew him for a lifetime or only briefly, Chris manifested joy and happiness wherever he went," the fundraiser states.
Shupe was described as a "skater boy" who was athletic, musical, a huge Philadelphia Eagles fan and an enjoyer of "crisp, quiet mornings" in nature.
"Let us honor Chris's memory by remembering the joy and happiness he brought into our lives and by spreading the crucial message: Don't drink and drive," the fundraiser says.
