PROVO — BYU coach Kalani Sitake's on-field coaching staff is complete after a two-man offensive shakeup following the Cougars' first season in the Big 12.

The Cougars announced the hiring of one-time BYU quarterback and 20-year coaching veteran Kevin M. Gilbride as BYU's next tight ends coach Friday night.

Gilbride, who attended BYU as a freshm quarterback in 1998 before transferring to Hawaii, replaces former tight ends coach Steve Clark. He's the second hire in the offseason for Sitake, who replaced offensive line coach Darrell Funk with TJ Woods.

Gilbride joins BYU after a year as an offensive analyst at Charlotte in the American Athletic Conference. Before then, he spent a dozen years in the NFL with the Carolina Panthers, Chicago Bears and New York Giants, where he earned a Super Bowl ring.

"Kevin's resume speaks for itself," BYU offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick said of the new assistant who also worked at Syracuse, Georgetown and Temple. "He has been a tight ends coach for most of his career. He brings the expertise to elevate the established tradition of great tight end play at BYU and to develop our players for the NFL."

Most of Gilbride's career was spent as a tight ends coach, including with the Panthers, where he helped the franchise set single-game records in 2022 in total yards (520) and rushing yards (320).

During his two-year tenure with the Bears, Gilbride helped Trey Burton finish with a career-high 54 catches for 569 yards and six touchdowns, which ranked fourth among NFC tight ends in 2018.

He also spent eight years with the New York Giants, working as an offensive quality control assistant in 2010, coaching wide receivers in 2012-13, and spending four years as the tight ends coach from 2014-17.

After attending BYU as a freshman, Gilbride played football and baseball at Hawaii before graduating in 2003 with a degree in communications. The son of former NFL coach Kevin Gilbride, who spent more than 20 years in the league, and his wife Rachel are the parents of one daughter.

"BYU is a special place where I started my college career and to come back full circle and coach here with my family is such an incredible opportunity." Gilbride said. "I have a deep respect and appreciation for the university and what it stands for, its tradition and passionate fans, and all of the people associated with it. Those things make a difference, and I am excited to be a part of this program again."
