NAPLES, Uintah County — Authorities in eastern Utah believe a Vernal man shot and killed his mother at a residential care facility in Naples before he was found dead inside a home Sunday.
Naples and Vernal police said that Patricia Bingham, 72, was found dead at a residential care facility in Naples. Her son, Mark Ryan Bingham, 42, was found dead inside a Vernal home by police and firefighters responding to a report of a fire at the home.
Vernal police and firefighters initially responded to a report of a fire at a Vernal home Sunday. Police didn't say where the home was or when the fire took place; however, first responders found the body of a man, identified as Mark Bingham, inside the building.
Naples police responded to a "medical event" at a residential care facility a short time later, where they found the body of woman, identified as Patricia Bingham, dead from a gunshot wound. Naples Police Chief Nathan Simper said Monday that investigators believe Mark Bingham pulled the trigger before fleeing to Vernal.
Police in both cities are still investigating the two cases, but they add that they are "certain there is no active threat to the community."
