SALT LAKE CITY — Hoops season is underway, and with it comes our first KSL.com Clean Simple Eats high school hoops players of the week.
Our girls player of the week is Alta senior Fuifuilupe "Fui" Niumeitolu, who announced her Hawks debut after transferring from Jordan with a 42-point, which included six 3-pointers, outing against Green Canyon on Nov. 17.
"I think it was just the excitement in general I felt for the first game of the season and this new team," Niumeitolu told KSL.com. "This coaching staff pushes us to be aggressive and competitive. We're trying to just keep working and compete in practice, and try and hopefully win region and make the playoffs."
The Hawks got their first win of the season Tuesday against Murray after losing the opener, despite the offensive explosion from Niumeitolu.
The boys player of the week is Cottonwood junior John Rosevear, who transferred from Brighton and dropped 24 points, three 3-pointers, in a 73-64 win over Mountain View to start the season for the Colts.
"We already have good team chemistry and I love everyone on the team," Rosevear said. "(Coach Marc Miller) helps us on and off the court to become better players and people. He never gets mad at us for taking bad shots and always encourages us to shoot the ball. He has put me in a role to find a lot of success, and I am super excited for the rest of the year."
Alta welcomes Granger next on Tuesday, Nov. 28, while Cottonwood travels to Northridge looking to start the season 2-0, also on Nov. 28.
