SALT LAKE CITY — Andie Aagard made the most of her final season of high school cross country, and so did her Lone Peak team.

Aagard blitzed to a winning time of 17 minutes, 25.9 seconds, and the Knights came as close to perfection as possible with five of the top-six finishers en route to their third 6A cross country title in four years Tuesday in Rose Park.

Aagard posted a time that would've ranked among the best in 6A state history on the previous course at Sugarhouse Park and Highland High School, before the state meet's move to the Salt Lake Regional Complex, according to the Utah High School Activities Association record book.

"I'm not planning on running in college, and I just wanted to put it out there," said Aagard, a nationally ranked mountain biker. "I've been injured lately, and it's been kind of frustrating. I wasn't sure about this race, but once we hit the 800, I felt like we could do this."

The Knights nearly swept the race, but for American Fork's Avalon Mecham, who finished second in 17:38.4.

But behind her came Lone Peak's Addie Meldrum (17:45.4), Maya Bybee (17:48.3), Boston Bybee (17:53.1) and Anna Bybee (18:11.17) to round out Lone Peak's scoring with a team score of 19.

The Cavemen finished second with three top-10 finishers with 48 points, followed by Westlake, Riverton and Herriman.

"We all work together, and it's so fun," said Maya Bybee, the first of the Bybee cousins to cross the finish line. "It was really fun. We just wanted to run and do our best, try to stick together. I'm so grateful to be on this team, and they're such good examples for me."

The deep finish is what excited Aagard the most, too, as the two-time reigning 6A champion now turns her attention toward the NXR Southwest girls championship and Nike Cross Nationals.

"It really made me smile, because I'm really excited to see how we can do this year at NXN and NXR, at the national level," Aagard said. "If I had gotten first or second, I don't know if it would've made a huge difference to me; that's not my main focus. It was more of what my team can do and how far we can go this year."
