OGDEN — A man has been charged with attempted murder, a first-degree felony, after Ogden police say he stabbed another man at least eight times and left him in critical condition.

Officers responded Oct. 12 to the area of 200 W. 33rd Street on report of a stabbing after two men were involved in a physical fight. Michael Raymond Acevedo, 31, told officers at the scene he was the one who stabbed the other man, according to a police booking affidavit.

Video footage from nearby surveillance cameras showed Acevedo, who is homeless, and the victim arguing on the sidewalk. According to the affidavit, the footage shows the victim grabbing his bicycle and walking towards Acevedo "in a somewhat aggressive manner" and Acevedo grabbing the victim and shoving him.

Acevedo drew a knife and continued to argue, but as the victim tried to leave, Acevedo grabbed him by the collar, according to the affidavit. The victim appeared to raise his arm to punch Acevedo, at which point Acevedo held the knife in the victim's face before stabbing him at least eight times in the face and neck area while the victim fell to the ground, the affidavit states.

"The victim can be seen attempting to stand up, but loses a large amount of blood very quickly and falls down as he appears to lose consciousness," the affidavit says. "Michael walks away calmly and waits down the street until police arrive."

Acevedo put the knife under a rock but eventually told police where to find it, and it was collected for evidence, according to the affidavit. Along with attempted murder, Acevedo was also charged with possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person, a class A misdemeanor. According to the affidavit, Acevedo was not supposed to be carrying a knife because he was on pretrial supervision after being charged in a domestic violence incident.

Acevedo later told police he stabbed the victim because he'd threatened Acevedo that he had a gun, but police found no evidence of this threat and never found a gun at the scene or with the victim, the affidavit states. Acevedo told police the victim had been following him around a homeless shelter and Acevedo felt the need to "end the threat," according to the affidavit.

"Michael said he 'blacked out' after the first time he stabbed the victim and didn't remember how many times he stabbed him in total," the affidavit states. "Michael said he wasn't trying to kill the victim. Michael said he actually hopes the victim survives, so he will remember not to '(expletive) with' Michael again."

But the victim was taken to the hospital with multiple stab wounds, and was in critical condition at the time the affidavit was written.

"Michael specifically targeted the victim's head, face, neck (and) upper chest which are all vital areas," the affidavit states. "Michael made statements that he knew what he did to the victim could have killed him."

Acevedo's initial court appearance was Monday. His next appearance is scheduled for Oct. 23.
