SALT LAKE CITY — She says she noticed other cars pulling over as she drove by.
But what the woman didn't realize was it was because of the red and blue flashing lights installed in the fog lights in her newly purchased vehicle.
On Wednesday, Salt Lake City police issued a warning about a person possibly impersonating an officer. A black Dodge Charger on I-80 between the Salt Lake City International Airport and Redwood Road was reported to have red and blue flashing lights embedded in its fog lights, and other drivers were pulling over believing it was a police vehicle. At the time, investigators said they didn't know if the driver was trying to pull other motorists over or just get them out of the way so she could move through traffic more quickly.
Police released a photo of the suspected impersonator's vehicle, taken by another driver, on Wednesday afternoon.
Now, the department says the whole thing was an innocent mistake.
The woman who owns the vehicle contacted Salt Lake City police after recognizing the car in the picture as her own. She told officers she had recently purchased the vehicle and did not know about the lights or the smartphone app that was activated to control them. The app can change the colors of the lights and apparently was last set to red and blue.
"The driver said while going to lunch, she noticed cars pulling over for no explainable reason," police stated.
Police do not believe the woman was intentionally impersonating an officer. The woman says she has since removed the lights from her vehicle.
