TREMONTON — A man was arrested by the Utah Highway Patrol Tuesday after troopers followed him from nearly Sandy to Tremonton.
The long pursuit began about 12:20 p.m. when a Toyota Tacoma passed a Utah Highway Patrol trooper on I-15 near 10600 South at a high rate of speed, according to a police booking affidavit.
"I sped up and matched the vehicle's speed at 100 mph in a 70 mph zone," the arresting trooper wrote in the affidavit. "I activated my police lights and sirens in (an) attempt to stop the vehicle. The vehicle continued without any indication that it was making the effort to yield. I then sounded my police sirens, but the vehicle still continued northbound."
The trooper then turned off his emergency lights and siren and did not chase the vehicle.
Not long after, another trooper in an unmarked patrol car spotted the vehicle again near the Salt Lake County-Davis County border and followed until a Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter could get into position, said UHP Sgt. Cameron Roden. Once the helicopter began following the car, troopers on the ground attempted another traffic stop in the northern Davis County/southern Weber County area, but the vehicle again fled from officers, Roden said.
The chase was called off for a second time because of safety concerns.
The vehicle continued to Box Elder County before the driver turned around, drove back to Weber County, then turned around again to head north, Roden said. Near Tremonton, troopers successfully deployed tire spikes. Roden said the car pulled off the freeway a short time later and stopped, and the driver was arrested.
The time troopers first attempted to pull over the vehicle to when the driver was taken into custody was at least an hour, Roden said. During the times troopers were engaged in an active pursuit with the car, the fleeing vehicle was, at times, going over 100 mph, he said.
Marijuana and drug paraphernalia were found in the vehicle after it was stopped, authorities said.
Devon Thomas Lee Bock, 27, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of a dozen charges including four counts of failing to stop for police, drug possession, DUI and speeding 100 mph or more.
