SALT LAKE CITY — A senior missionary of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints died in Vanuatu on Saturday.
Sister Marina Carver, of Riverton, was serving with her husband, Elder Richard Carver, in the island nation of Vanuatu when they were involved in a car accident on Friday, church spokesman Sam Penrod said.
The Carvers were traveling in a car on the island of Santo in the South Pacific on Friday when another car "veered into their lane of traffic causing a head-on collision," Penrod said.
The couple was taken to a local hospital and then later transferred to a hospital in Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu.
Sister Carver died on Saturday from the internal injuries suffered in the collision. Elder Carver is expected to recover, but was still receiving medical treatment.
The Carvers are from Riverton. They had been serving in the Vanuatu Port Vila Mission since October of 2022, Penrod said. They were assigned as member and leader support missionaries.
"We send our deepest condolences to Elder Carver, their children and extended family members. We pray they will be comforted with their understanding of Sister Carver's faith in Heavenly Father's plan for families to be together forever," the church said in a statement.
