SOUTH WEBER, Davis County — Two people who were killed Monday afternoon when their motorcycle crashed into a pickup truck were identified a day later as two employees of the Davis County Sheriff's Office.

In a prepared statement Tuesday, the sheriff's office identified the deceased as Cpl. Steven Lewis, 54, and deputy Jennifer Turner, 39.

The crash happened about 3:20 p.m. Monday. Lewis and Turner were on a motorcycle heading east on South Weber Drive near 725 East when police believe they had difficulty negotiating a curve. The motorcycle drifted out of its lane and hit the driver's side of a westbound pickup truck pulling a utility trailer, according to a news release from the Utah Highway Patrol.

Both Lewis and Turner were critically injured in the collision and died at the crash scene, the UHP release says. The driver of the pickup truck was not injured.

Tuesday's statement from the sheriff's office says Lewis served in Army for six years and has been with Davis County Sheriff's Office for the last 5.5 years. He leaves behind his parents, Robyn and Ralph Lewis.

Turner joined the sheriff's office in 2020, the statement says. She leaves behind her three children — June, Ashlyn and Bryce — her parents, Daryl and Colette Peterson, and many siblings.

Sheriff Kelly Sparks said Lewis and Turner were engaged to be married and were off-duty at the time of the crash.

"The tragic passing of Cpl. Steven Lewis and deputy Jennifer Turner is devastating to all of us," Sparks said in the statement. "Both were very impactful in their positions at the sheriff's office and will be deeply missed. I know they were both excited about their future together."

The sheriff's office statement also said both Lewis and Turner touched many lives in the community.

"We appreciate the outpouring of support from across the state and nation as we grieve not one, but two holes that our (Davis County Sheriff's Office) family now has," the statement says.

The Utah Highway Patrol took over the investigation of the crash due to the conflict of interest within the sheriff's office. UHP Sgt. Rick Shrader said speed might have been a factor in the crash; driver impairment is not suspected as a factor.

South Weber Drive was closed from the area of the accident to the Canyon Meadows Drive intersection for several hours Monday while troopers investigated.
