SALT LAKE CITY — Police have identified a man believed to have been involved in a shooting in Salt Lake City that left a 23-year-old man injured Sunday evening.

Johnny Cuevas, 30, was booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail for investigation of several counts related to the shooting.

The initial shooting occurred in the area of 100 S. 300 East, Salt Lake police detective Michael Ruff said.

"The suspect then continued south on 300 East; and at about 250 S. 300 East, more rounds were fired," Ruff said, but there were no more injuries or property damage. "The suspect continued to flee and our officers were able to locate that individual near the library and took him into custody safely."

The victim was later found at a local hospital with a gunshot wound to the foot, which is not life-threatening, police said in a news release Monday.

Officers detained Cuevas near the main branch of the City Library after receiving a community tip, police said.

Investigators said that Cuevas was restricted from possessing a firearm at the time of the offense, and asked that he be held without bail.

Police believe the victim and the suspect know each other, but they do not yet know to what degree. "There was some sort of altercation beforehand; some sort of argument that led to this," Ruff said.

A gun has also been recovered and there is no current danger to the public, he said.
