STUART, Florida — The body of a 22-year-old Utah man was recovered after he went missing while free diving with friends in Florida.
About12:30 p.m. Friday in Florida, the Martin County Sheriff's Office said it was taking part in a multi-agency effort to locate a diver who went missing more than an hour earlier about 5 miles off shore of Sandsprit Park.
The sheriff's office posted two hours later, saying the search for the diver ended "with the worst possible outcome." The body of Max Roberts was recovered about 2.5 miles off-shore.
Roberts was visiting the area and had been free diving and spear fishing with a group of friends. His friends told police that Roberts dove into the water with his spear gun and never resurfaced, so they immediately called for help.
The Martin County Fire Rescue dive team and the county sheriff's marine unit located Roberts' body 50 feet underwater, with his spear gun deployed. Police say there was no obvious signs of trauma and the medical examiner will determine the cause of death.
Correction: In a previous version police reported the victim's last name as Robertson. It is Roberts.
