PROVO — If winning a repeat 3,200-meter state title wasn't enough motivation for Millard senior Michael Ralphs, one of the competitors on his heels was his younger brother Ben.
Ralphs pulled away for his second 2A state title in 9 minutes, 45.48 seconds and younger brother Ben Ralphs added a third-place finish in 9:56.44 to help the Eagles dominate the 3,200-meter run and keep pace atop the team standing after Friday's opening day of the state track and field championships at BYU's Clarence Robison Track.
"He's a lot faster than I was, so it's kind of scary knowing that he's always back there," said Ralphs, who admitted he was up all night the day before the meet. "But it's super fun to be able to train together and to race. I got him in these longer runs, but in the 800, he can get me. He's fast."
Millard placed three of the top-four runners in the 3,200, helping the Eagles keep pace with North Sevier's 36 points atop the 2A leaderboard with a 10-point lead over Beaver (16), Duchesne (16) and Enterprise (14).
Kanab's girls edged Millard, 44-42 after the first day of competition as the two 2A powers pulled away from the field by 12 or more points over North Summit, North Sevier and Beaver.
