6A track and field: Layton boys, American Fork girls take early lead as relay records fall

PROVO — Tyler Poole picked up titles in the shot put and discus to lift Layton's boys to a lead after the first day, and Clara Baker won the shot put to help American Fork's girls take an early lead over Region 4 rival Lone Peak and Bingham after the first day of the 6A state track and field championships at Clarence Robison Track at BYU.

Meanwhile, four records fell in the relay races to conclude the meet.

Herriman's boys 4x800-meter squad blaze to a time of 7 minutes, 39.63 seconds, while Lone Peak's girls added a record time of 9:11.91 in the same event. Corner Canyon set a new mark of 1:26.41 in the 4x200-meter relay, while Bingham's girls broke its own record set earlier in the season with a time of 1:41.20.
