LAYTON — Police say distracted driving is being investigated as a possible cause of a head-on collision between two cars that killed one woman and injured five others in Layton on Sunday.

Just before 7 p.m., a 31-year-old woman was driving a Honda Pilot east near 2225 W. Gordon Ave. with her 2-year-old daughter in a car seat in the back, when she swerved into oncoming traffic for unknown reason and hit a Toyota Corolla, said Layton Police Lt. Travis Lyman.

Five people, ranging in ages from 15 to 72, were in the Corolla. Ruth Carillos, 53, who was sitting in the back seat, died as a result of her injuries. Lyman said the four others were all transported to a local hospital, some with "substantial but not life-threatening" injuries.

The 2-year-old girl in the Honda was also taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. The 31-year-old driver was not injured.

Lyman says the woman told officers on scene that "she looked away briefly" just before the crash. Whether the woman was distracted by her phone, her daughter or something else, is part of the ongoing investigation, he said.
