NORTH OGDEN — A man killed in a shootout with North Ogden police was a sibling of one of the homeowners found deceased inside a burning house, Weber County officials confirmed on Friday.

The name of the man killed by police has not been released. But Branden Miles with the Weber County Attorney's Office confirmed Friday that Scott Roberts was found deceased inside the house at 3220 Mountain Road, and Jodi Roberts, who was found injured outside the home, was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were serious but not life-threatening. Both are believed to be in their 60s. An update on Jodi Roberts' condition was not provided Friday.

On Thursday, about 6:30 p.m., police responded to a report of shots at the Roberts' home. Neighbors reported hearing as many as 15 shots.

"I heard some really fast-paced pops. 'Pop pop pop pop pop,'" neighbor Lisa Olsen said.

Bullet holes could be seen Friday in a garage across the street from the home.

As soon as North Ogden police officers arrived, a man came running out of the home and began shooting at them, according to police. Officers returned fire, hitting and killing the gunman.

After the shooting had ended, police realized that the home he had just come out of was on fire.

"As part of securing the scene they were required to run into a structure on fire after already dealing with a very stressful situation," North Ogden city officials said in a prepared statement.

The home is considered a total loss.

Miles confirmed Friday that the incident was believed to have started due to a "family issue," while confirming that the man killed by police was Scott Roberts' brother, who did not live at the residence.

Miles said autopsy results were still pending Friday afternoon, so he could not say if Roberts was killed by the fire. Although neighbors have stated that Jodi Roberts appeared to be suffering from a gunshot wound when she was found, Miles declined to comment if either Roberts had been shot.

As for the origin of the fire that destroyed their house, he said it is believed to have been intentionally set, but again declined to give further details, saying that more information was expected to be released next week.

"Our hearts go out to the families impacted by this incident. We are grateful our amazing police officers are safe and hope the community is able to come together to help those involved heal physically and emotionally from this traumatic event," the city stated.
