TAYLORSVILLE — Two people were shot and killed late Monday night while in a car at a Taylorsville apartment complex.

The search for the gunman continued Tuesday.

Two people in a Honda were at the Atherton Park Apartments, 4545 S. Atherton Drive (1075 West), about 11:30 p.m. Monday when both the driver and passenger were shot. Multiple bullet holes were found in the car's windshield and the driver's side window, said Taylorsville Police Sgt. Jake Hill.

After the shooting, the car, which was still running and in gear, came to a stop after rolling into a fence and a snowbank, police said. The driver, a man, was shot in the head and was deceased when police arrived, Hill said. The passenger was shot in the chest and died at the scene despite lifesaving efforts from officers.

It was not immediately known if the passenger was a man or woman, he said. Police said they will wait for an autopsy from the Utah State Medical Examiner's Office to confirm the names, ages and sexes of the victims.

It was unknown Tuesday if either victim lived at the apartment complex or had ties to it. Two guns were found in the victim's vehicle, but investigators do not believe they were fired in this incident, Hill said.

Police responded to the shooting quickly and surrounded the area. A Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter in addition to officers from other nearby agencies also responded to the scene to help look for the gunman. A police K-9 tracking the gunman found a discarded gun in a nearby mobile home park, Hill said. As of Tuesday, investigators were still running tests to determine whether it was used in the shooting.

No arrests have been made in the case.

Police are asking anyone with information about the case, or who may have seen or heard something or have pictures or videos related to the incident, to contact them at 801-840-4000.
