SALT LAKE CITY — Utah's next snowstorm is quickly approaching, with rain expected to turn to snow along the Wasatch Front on Tuesday evening.
It's the first of two winter weather systems to arrive this week, which could bring 1 to 2 feet of mountain snow between Tuesday and Wednesday. The second system will arrive Friday and continue through Sunday.
Snowfall in the valleys is expected to be much lighter, with less than an inch expected through 5 a.m. on Thursday in Salt Lake City, Provo and Ogden. Still, the National Weather Service warns drivers to be wary of slick road conditions caused by freezing rain and snow.
Heavy snow is expected on mountain roads in northern and eastern Utah on Tuesday evening, and most of northern Utah will see light snow in the valleys early Wednesday.

Both Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons are forecast to receive several inches of snow, and traction laws are now in effect, according to the Utah Department of Transportation.
The Utah Avalanche Center warned of a high risk of avalanches in the Bear River Range, in northern Utah and southeast Idaho, through 6 a.m. Wednesday. Officials also warned of high avalanche danger at all elevations, and said people should stay off and out from under slopes steeper than 30 degrees.
U.S. 189 in Provo Canyon will be periodically closed between Canyon Glen Park and Vivian Park on Tuesday night for avalanche control work.
