RAWLINS, Wyo. — A first responder is dead after being hit by semitruck while providing medical attention at the scene of an accident.
At 3:55 a.m. on Wednesday, Wyoming Highway Patrol troopers were notified of a two-vehicle crash at milepost 197 westbound on Interstate 80 west of Rawlins. The crash involved a semitruck with a trailer and a pickup truck pulling a small enclosed trailer.
A second, fatal accident occurred around 4:15 a.m. while first responders attended to the initial crash, according to a statement from the Wyoming Highway Patrol.
Tyeler Harris, 29, of Saratoga, Wyoming, sustained fatal injuries when the 2019 Freightliner semitruck with a trailer struck him and another first responder, then collided with the rear of an ambulance, the highway patrol statement says.
Harris was a member of the ambulance service on scene. The other first responder was critically injured.
The driver of the semitruck involved in the second crash has been identified as Saviol Saint Gean of Brooklyn, New York. Police are investigating driver inattention as a possible contributing factor in the crash.
