TAYLORSVILLE — A man was shot in the head during an apparent road rage incident in Taylorsville on Thursday, according to police.

Despite the critical injury, Taylorsville Police Sgt. Jake Hill said the victim, a man in his 30s, is stable and expected to survive.

The incident happened about 1:30 p.m. Two vehicles were making a left turn from 6200 South to go north on Redwood Road. The vehicles were side-by-side when witnesses say someone fired from the passenger window of an SUV at the victim's car. Hill said the man was struck in the head.

The victim's vehicle came to a stop after crashing into the I-215 overpass a short distance away.

A witness who spoke with KSL-TV on the condition of anonymity said she heard two gunshots, then saw a white car jump over to the southbound lane and crash under a bridge.

"It was really scary because he was really close to me," she said.

Witnesses calling emergency dispatchers reported a possible road rage incident leading up to the shooting, Hill said. That part of the investigation was ongoing Thursday afternoon.

The victim was the lone person in his vehicle. Investigators believe multiple people were in a gray or silver SUV, possibly a GMC. The search for that vehicle continued Thursday afternoon.

Redwood Road between 5800 South and 6200 South was closed for several hours as detectives processed the crime scene.
