TAYLORSVILLE — A 3-year-old Taylorsville boy died of an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound on Thursday.
The tragic incident happened about 12:15 a.m. at the Thornhill Apartments, 1645 W. Thornhill Drive. Taylorsville police say the young child got ahold of a gun that was unsecured inside the apartment and accidentally shot himself.
Police officers and other first responders attempted life-saving measures on the boy, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, police say. The name of the child has not yet been released.
Information about where the gun was in the apartment and how the boy got ahold of it was still being investigated Thursday. But police say it appears the incident is a tragic accident and no foul play is involved. The boy's parents are cooperating with the investigation, police said. Both parents were awake at the time of the shooting.
