SUMMIT PARK, Summit County — A man who troopers say was laughing when he was pulled over for going over 100 mph in Parleys Canyon seemed surprised when he was placed in handcuffs and arrested in Summit County on Sunday.
About 2:30 p.m., a Utah Highway Patrol trooper observed two vehicles coming in his direction, eastbound on I-80, "weaving in and out of traffic with each other at an estimated 120 mph in a 65 mph zone," according to a police booking affidavit.
The trooper noted that both vehicles hit their brakes when they saw his patrol car sitting in the median, but he still recorded them going 115 mph, the affidavit states.
A gray BMW was pulled over. The trooper walked to the car and found a 19-year-old driver "who was laughing and did not seemed (fazed) by the stop," according to the affidavit. "The vehicle had a cracked windshield spanning the entire windshield."
The trooper noted that he asked the driver — "with him still seeming to have little concern about the situation" — to exit the vehicle. The driver then "acted surprised when he was being placed under arrest due to his speed of 115 in a 65," the trooper wrote in the affidavit.
The man was booked into the Summit County Jail for investigation of engaging in a speed contest, reckless driving, and two infractions, including having an unsafe windshield.
The other vehicle allegedly racing the BMW is believed to be a Mercedes. The arrest report says troopers plan to review dashcam video in an effort to identify the driver.
