PROVO — The former coach of a high school sports team in Provo is accused of inappropriately touching one of his female players multiple times.

Jonathan Leo Merrill, 24, of Orem, was charged Friday in 4th District Court with three counts of forcible sexual abuse, a second-degree felony.

Between 2019 and 2021, when Merrill was a coach for the Timpview High School ultimate frisbee team, he began a "physical relationship" with one of his players when she was 16, according to charging documents. Police say Merrill and the girl began texting each other about a year earlier.

"The victim stated that Merrill began giving her rides in his car to and from school and practice. The victim stated that they continued to text, and by the time she was 16 years old, she began meeting up with coach Merrill and they began a physical relationship. The victim said that looking back now, she believes that Merrill groomed her into having a physical relationship with him," a search warrant affidavit states.

"The victim disclosed that on more than one occasion, (Merrill) would tell her to sneak out of her house and he would drive them to a remote location," according to charging documents.

On three occasions, there was inappropriate touching between the two, both over and under their clothing, the charges allege.

"The victim also stated that she had conversations with coach Merrill where they talked about needing to keep the relationship a secret so as to avoid trouble with the police," according to the affidavit.

Ultimate frisbee is a club sport and not a sanctioned high school sport at Timpview.

"Accordingly, the coach was never an employee of Provo City School District or Timpview High School," the district said in a prepared statement on Saturday. "The coach is no longer associated with the team and has not coached this year. Parents and students were notified as soon as the school was made aware of the allegations and given contact information for Provo police. The district will continue to provide support and resources to any students that may need it."
