COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — The Utah Department of Transportation announced Thursday it is expanding its Cottonwood canyons vehicle sticker program that started on Thursday ahead of the winter season.

The free service allows drivers to quickly pass through inspections when the state's traction law is in effect for the Cottonwood canyons.

"Having vehicle tires pre-inspected prior to severe winter weather driving conditions assists local law enforcement when they do not have available resources to inspect vehicles at the mouth of the canyons by having that inspection occur off site, outside of peak travel periods and done thoroughly," transportation officials noted in a statement.

This year, the state has partnered with more businesses to perform the inspections. Mechanics check vehicle tires and make sure drivers have the right equipment for winter conditions before issuing a sticker.

In 2021, UDOT opened the program to the general public for the first time. Before then, it was reserved for canyon residents and workers.

The program runs through Feb. 28 or while supplies last. Big O Tires, Burt Brothers and CJ's Pit Stop will now provide inspection locations across the Wasatch Front.

Participation in the voluntary sticker program is not required to drive in Big and Little Cottonwood canyons but will allow drivers to quickly pass inspections when the traction law is in effect following or during major snow storms and other weather events.
