SALT LAKE CITY — It is the end of an era for an iconic department store in downtown Salt Lake City as crews began demolishing the old Sears building at 754 S. State Street on Tuesday.
Intermountain Healthcare purchased the property in 2021. The plans for the property are still being developed.
"During this time, we've worked closely with Salt Lake City to begin plans to raze the former Sears building in an effort to ensure the safety of residents. Plans for the site are still being developed and finalized. Details will be announced at a future date," Intermountain Healthcare spokesman Jess Gomez said in a statement.

Intermountain Healthcare confirmed it has purchased the old Sears building in downtown Salt Lake City.Many customers of a popular taco truck on the sidewalk of the property said they were excited to see what would eventually be built on the site. Lole Taula remembers coming to the department store as a child to shop and eat tacos from Tacos Don Rafa.
He is hopeful the new plans include keeping the taco truck along the property's sidewalk.
"It will be nice to see our community will have an accessible hospital close by," Taula said. "Hopefully TDR can get a good relocation because it's always been on, you know, this corner."
Sears closed its Salt Lake City store in early 2018.
