SALT LAKE CITY — A man died at a hospital after being taken into police custody and two officers were injured in an incident Sunday, Salt Lake police said.

Police responded to a report of a man who had allegedly attempted to steal from a business near 800 South and 300 West around 3 p.m. before leaving the business, police said.

When the man was located a few blocks away and taken into police custody, the man began to fight with the officers, a department spokesman said. Two officers sustained significant but not life-threatening injuries, police said.

Later officers noticed the man was unresponsive and began performing life-saving measures, including chest compressions and administering naloxone, according to police. The man was transported to the hospital where he later died.

The two officers were also taken to the hospital.

The incident is under investigation and the officer-involved critical incident protocol has been activated.

The man's identity has not been released.
