WEST BOUNTIFUL — A North Salt Lake man was killed and his 17-year-old daughter critically injured when they were hit from behind by a pickup truck while riding bicycles.

Michael Scott Roberts, 53, was riding bikes with his teen daughter just after 4 p.m. Thursday near 1050 W. Pages Lane in West Bountiful, when they were struck from behind by a pickup that had drifted off the main roadway into the shoulder, according to West Bountiful police.

The driver of the truck, Sean Douglas Mikesell, 29, of West Bountiful, came to a stop about 100 yards later, according to a police booking affidavit.

"Mikesell was heard saying he hit them and to call 911. Approximately nine individuals heard the crash and all but one said they did not hear any braking or squealing of tires that would suggest evasive action. The other individual said they did not remember whether they heard those sounds," the affidavit states. "One witness turned around after hearing the crash and saw bodies flying through the air."

Roberts was pronounced dead at the scene. His daughter, whose name was not released, was taken to Primary Children's Hospital. Police say she is now stable and expected to survive.

Mikesell was arrested and booked into the Davis County Jail for investigation of negligently operating a vehicle resulting in death, drug possession, possession of drug paraphernalia and unsafe lane travel.

According to police, Mikesell has a long history of drug use. Officers noted in their affidavit that while at the police station, Mikesell appeared to keep nodding off.

"Sean told me he wasn't falling asleep and just going through a lot of emotions. Sean continued to fall asleep and told me he had a long day being out in the sun," the affidavit states.

Police at the crash scene found "several needles in the storm drain right next to the passenger front wheel. Some of the needles were used, and one of them was new and loaded," according to the arrest report.

Blood was drawn from Mikesell to determine whether drugs were a factor in the crash. Police say that part of the investigation was ongoing Friday.
