WEST JORDAN — A West Jordan man pleaded guilty Friday to sexually abusing a child in his church congregation.
Sean Sund, 49, was a Primary teacher in his ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was accused of sexually abusing an 8-year-old girl, one of his class members, on more than one occasion while she was sleeping over at his house, according to charging documents.
Sund was charged in June 2018 with five counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, a first-degree felony. He pleaded guilty to one count of sexual abuse of a child, a second degree felony, as part of a plea deal.
Sund's case was scheduled for a jury trial this month. He has been out of jail on supervised release for the last four years, after being released on bail.
He is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 1. Part of the plea deal includes a recommendation that Sund will spend 364 days in jail with a prison term suspended. A judge, however, will ultimately decide the sentence.
