SPRINGVILLE — A man was shot and killed by police after crashing a vehicle into a patrol car and threatening an officer with a knife as they responded to a report of shots fired outside of a Walmart Friday night, police said.

Springville officers responded to a report of a man firing a gun in the air outside of the Walmart located at 660 S. 1750 West, shortly before 11 p.m., according to Springville police. The call was made by an unnamed tipster.

When officers arrived in the parking lot, a man, whose name and age weren't immediately released, "followed the officer in a vehicle" before crashing it into the back of a patrol car. He then got out of the vehicle and threatened an officer with a knife, according to the agency.

The officer fired at least one shot at the man. Springville Fire and Rescue, who also responded to the area, provided emergency aid but the man was declared dead at the scene.

Springville police said that a preliminary investigation found no evidence that shots were fired before police arrived. Springville Police Lt. Warren Foster told KSL.com it's possible that the initial call came from the man who was shot and killed.

Police add there is no threat to the public.
