OGDEN — A man is in jail in Weber County after Ogden police say he fought with two officers, disarmed one of them, and then fired the officer's gun.
On Sunday, Ogden police were called out to Common Cents gas station, 3563 Wall Ave., on a report that a man had punched a woman and then ran off, according to a police booking affidavit. A man fitting the description of the suspect, identified in police documents as Dana Lydell Smith, 29, was located walking in the direction of a Costco on Wall Ave.
When Smith spotted the officers, police say he ran from them. The officers caught up with him and the three ended up in a "physical altercation," the affidavit says.
It was at this point, police say, that Smith took a gun from one of the officers and fired it. Nobody was injured in the shooting, and police used a Tazer on Smith multiple times in order to subdue and arrest him, the affidavit says.
Smith was taken to the hospital to be checked out before he was booked into the Weber County Jail for investigation of multiple charges, including disarming a police officer, assault on an officer with a dangerous weapon, and unlawful discharge of a weapon. He could also face charges of failure to stop at the command of a police officer, interfering with an officer, failure to disclose his identity and assault.
