EAGLE MOUNTAIN — Two 3-year-old boys were killed and three occupants of a car suffered injuries Monday in an accident in Eagle Mountain involving a speeding driver, police say.
The incident happened Monday night around 2300 North and 16000 West, when "a driver traveling at high speed lost control" and went through a fence and into a corral where the two boys were playing, the Utah County Sheriff's Office tweeted at 8:35 p.m. Both of the boys were hit and died instantly, according to a news release from the sheriff's office Tuesday morning.
The driver of the car is identified as Kent Cody Barlow, 25, of Eagle Mountain. He was seriously injured and flown to Utah Valley Hospital with bruises and abrasions but no broken bones, the release said. He was treated, released from the hospital and booked into jail. Deputies originally identified the driver as being 19 years old and in critical condition on Monday night.
Three passengers were taken to local hospitals for treatment. At least two of them have been released.
Barlow drove through two horse stables and two corrals, causing a path of destruction of at least 345 feet, according to Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon. The boys who died ended up 75 feet from where they were playing.
Passengers in the car told deputies the vehicle was traveling 80 to 100 mph prior to the crash. The crash happened on a private road where there are no speed limits, police said. Witnesses at the scene also told KSL-TV that speeding has previously been an issue on this road.
The names of the deceased have not been released at this time.
Investigators found evidence the driver was impaired and say a preliminary drug screen was positive for methamphetamine.
Barlow was booked into jail for investigation of multiple infractions including automobile homicide, DUI with criminal negligence, possession of a controlled substance, and DUI with serious bodily injury.
