SALT LAKE CITY — A military-grade device was removed from the International Peace Gardens in Jordan Park on Sunday, Salt Lake police said.
At about 9:15 a.m. a community member reported a 'suspicious device' to 911 dispatchers, Salt Lake Police Chief Mike Brown said in a news release. Patrol officers responded and secured the scene.
After securing the scene, officers consulted with the Hazardous Device Unit "about what precautions should be taken to ensure community safety," the release said.
Police closed a small portion of the International Peace Gardens and safely removed the object with assistance from the Utah Air National Guard and Hazardous Device Unit, according to Brown.
Police are investigating the exact nature of the device and how it ended up inside the park. Military-grade memorabilia that may be discovered during estate cleaning or other circumstances should never be disposed of or moved, police said.
Any found devices should be reported to 911.
The International Peace Gardens were reopened following the investigation, at about 11:30 a.m.
